Young Blood: Analyzing MOBA's Latest Signings - Lukas Joyner

Georgia State University has proven itself to be home to a number of great talents. Four of the players on MOBA's 2016 roster (Casey Shultis, Salomon Lorenzano, Nick Hague, Luke Oesterle) played soccer for the Panthers, leading the squad to a 14-8 record. From all around the state and the country, some of the best soccer talents can be found at GSU, and MOBA's latest addition to the squad is no different.

Lukas Joyner - Georgia State University

A young player with mounds of potential, Joyner joined up with the Panthers and made an immediate impact, however prior to his collegiate career, Lukas was a star at Stratford Academy in Macon. Lettering in all five of his secondary school years, the defender/midfielder led the team to an unprecedented stretch of success. Winning four straight region titles as well as two state championships, Joyner was a leader on the team for his entire tenure. Lukas was recognized for his leadership and playing capabilities by both the region and the state as he was selected to the All-Region team four times and the All-State team three times. Joyner not only excelled at soccer, however, as he also proved to be a great track runner, lettering for the Stratford team that won the 2013-14, participating in the 800m, 1,600m, 3,200m, and 4x400 relay.

Joining the GSU squad as a freshman in 2015, Lukas proved to be a key part of the Panther's success. Playing in seventeen games his first year, he tallied 1,431 minutes and notched one goal as a defender. The Panthers finished 9-8-1 that year, including victories at home against Appalachian State and on the road at rival Georgia Southern. In the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Lukas played all 120 minutes against Georgia Southern in a shootout victory in favor of the Panthers. The following year, Joyner became an even larger part of the team as he played in twenty-one games, accumulating 1,699 minutes and scoring one goal. During the 2016 season, the Panthers made it all the way to the third round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament knocking off Georgia Southern for the second straight year before falling to one-seed Coastal Carolina 1-0. Making the Dean's List in the Fall of 2015 and Spring of 2016 as well making the 2016 Sun Belt Commissioner's List, Joyner proved to be incredibly successful both on and off the pitch.

Joining fellow Panther Salomon Lorenzano on the back line for MOBA, Lukas is expected to solidify MOBA's back four alongside his new teammates Adam Sheikali and Michael Brezovsky. Unquestionably a great talent, there is no wonder the MOBA coaching staff added Joyner to the 2017 roster. Not only is he a strong defender, but his ability to switch the field and get his team back onto the offensive will be a welcome addition to a squad looking for their first-ever winning season.

2016 MOBA Proud MOTY Award

PDL Playoffs kicked off today, thus marking the transition between regular and post season. Now that MOBA's 2016 season is complete, it is finally safe to begin handing out recognition and awards for excellence in the sport, and there is no better prize than receiving the title of 2016 Man of the Year (the association football equivalent of MVP). The sport of football is based around two principles: Pride and Teamwork. However, teamwork does not mean that nobody deserves recognition for outstanding play. After such a promising start to the year that saw MOBA open 2-1-2 and reach the top of the table, back-to-back 2-0 away losses have sparked some fear that this season may degrade into a carbon copy of the previous two.
