PDL vs. NPSL: Where is the Division?

Image
The fourth division of U.S. soccer has grown profoundly over recent years, corresponding with the growing admiration American citizens have for the sport of soccer. Housing 168 teams from California to Maine, the PDL and NPSL have shown the world that the American soccer system is becoming one of the biggest in the world. Despite that, there is a visible split between the two leagues that has been there since the NPSL's founding in 2003, and it becomes more visible with each passing year, but where is the line, and what caused such a gap between two leagues in the same level? Peachtree City MOBA (PDL) take on Atlanta Silverbacks FC (NPSL) in a mid-season friendly The Premier Development League, founded in 1995 as the USISL Premier League, has seen its playing field grow to 72 teams over its 22 seasons. Owned and operated by the United Soccer League of the second tier, a number of great talents have passed through the PDL ranks, including Graham Zusi of Sporting Kansa

Sometimes, all it takes is one. Coming into Wednesday, MOBA were looking to bounce back after the season opened with struggles, with Peachtree City recording only one point through three games. With a two week break before the next league match, Peachtree City needed to stay fit and in form, and the best way to do that is take on the reigning NPSL South Atlantic Conference champions in the Atlanta Silverbacks. Following a heartbreaking defeat at home against Mississippi Brilla FC, MOBA needed to get out to a quick start and score goals if they wanted to have a chance, and early on, they did just that. Right out of the gate, MOBA had a number of early opportunities, as Jordan Smith-Williams and Daniel Valenciano spearheaded the attack for the home team. In the fifteenth minute, Peachtree City got the breakthrough they needed, as Valenciano tackled the ball away from a Silverbacks defender, turned the corner, and took a beautiful stroke that keeper Matt Carr had no chance to stop,

Sometimes, it just really is not your day. Heading into Saturday's game against Mississippi Brilla FC, MOBA had to have felt good after getting a draw against rivals Tormenta FC. All they had to was play with the same energy and fire that they played with in the second half of that game, however having played that game just two days prior, energy had to be at a low for the MOBA squad. Forced to make a few lineup changes due to fatigue, head coach Volker Harms hoped that that would be enough to grab three points at home. It goes without saying that rain always has something to say about the outcome of a game no matter the sport. The victor more than likely will be the team that can handle the slickness and speed with which the ball moves across the pitch, and they must accustom their playstyle to those factors. With heavy rains coming down prior to the game, and right after halftime, both MOBA and Brilla had to change their games, but it just worked out better for Mississippi

Some of the best games in sports history feature two teams from different divisions and conferences going head to head. Falcons and Patriots in Super Bowl LI (it still hurts). Warriors and Cavs in game 7 of the NBA Finals. Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC in the 2016 MLS Cup Final. Sometimes geographic distance proves to be great for some teams, as the separation between two clubs allows for a clash of cultures in what can be a historic matchup. During MOBA's inaugural campaign, Peachtree City met Mississippi Brilla FC twice, once in the season opener and again on match day twelve. The series proved to be an exciting one, as Peachtree City  and Mississippi proved to be worthy adversaries early on. MOBA's Alex Rotoloni scored the first goal in the opener, but Brilla struck back with two goals late to propel the home side to victory. In Peachtree City, it was Casey Shultis who found the net beautifully in the twenty-seventh minute before Newton Henry struck back right before half

Match Recap: Valenciano Evens it Up in the 47th, MOBA Grabs a Point in Statesboro

Coming off a 6-1 loss in Nashville, MOBA came into Statesboro looking for redemption. The whole night, Peachtree City was getting beat on and off the dribble, and goals would not stop coming from the Nashville SC U23 team. During the week, head coach Volker Harms looked to repair those issues with lineup changes and strategical fixes with a desire to bounce back against rivals South Georgia Tormenta FC. Right from the get-go, MOBA looked like a better team. Winning tackles in crucial areas, getting runs that led to goal-scoring opportunities, and most importantly, playing with energy. The ball went back and forth for the first thirty minutes, with Khallil Stewart and Todd Fidler anchoring the offense, while Salomon Lorenzano proved once again why he won Man of the Year last season as he led the defense. The momentum was split pretty evenly during the opening third, but one poorly timed tackle shifted the game into Tormenta's favor. In the thirty-sixth minute, MOBA defender A

Ask anybody, bouncing back is never easy. After four straight crushing defeats in the Super Bowl, the Buffalo Bills still failed to capture the elusive trophy, as Buffalo couldn't make it back to the big game in 1994. After falling apart at the end of the 2000-01 season, Leeds United saw themselves fall from the Premier League to the English Football League One, the third tier of English football in just four years, the fastest fall in English history. Bouncing back is a challenge within itself, and following MOBA's surprise loss to Nashville SC U23 on Saturday, they will need to put their misfortunes behind them and look forward to Statesboro. Entering Saturday's matchup, MOBA had high hopes after going 3-0-0 in the pre-season, however those hopes were shattered early and quick, as Nashville thrashed the MOBA defense for six goals, including three in the first thirty minutes, showing great resemblance to Atlanta United's victory over Minnesota United in MLS

Match Recap: Early Deficit Proves Too Much to Handle, MOBA Fall to Nashville 6-1

Nobody ever said it was going to be easy. Coming off a strong start in the pre-season, MOBA had high hopes going into to Nashville for the season opener. Nashville, however, had other plans. Coming off their own strong pre-season (be it only one game), Nashville SC U23 saw at their feet an opportunity to come into the league running, and they did just that. Immediately following the opening whistle, Nashville pressed hard. Forcing MOBA into an early foul, the U23's capitalized on their first opportunity of the match, as Martim Galvao put the home side up 1-0 with a free kick goal in the third minute that keeper Nick Nelson had no chance to save. Down a goal for the second straight game, MOBA wanted to turn around and reverse the momentum. They did that, briefly, getting two close shots that had a chance to go in, but in the end found only the end line. Twenty-five minutes later, Nashville found themselves another chance, and somehow took advantage of it. After a shot pinball

Match Preview: MOBA Heads to Nashville for Season Opener

At long last, the season is finally here. The road to the PDL Championship has already been paved, and all that remains is for Peachtree City MOBA to start driving. First stop: Nashville, Tennessee. Opening the 2017 PDL season, MOBA takes on Nashville SC U23 at Vanderbilt Stadium in what has turned into quite the exciting matchup. The pre-season for MOBA was not what anybody expected. Following a 3-9-2 season in 2016, MOBA wanted to get themselves on track, and that started in the pre-season. It was without question that Peachtree City was projected to be a better team than last season, however few suspected them to be quite as good as they started. Starting against an experienced NPSL side in Georgia Revolution FC with a home and home series, followed up by one of the best adult teams in Georgia in the East Point Pumas of Liga MAGG. Heading to Hampton, MOBA surprised the PDL, NPSL, and the soccer community, as they knocked off the Revs 3-0, with goals by Santiago Moore and Todd

2017 Peachtree City MOBA Season Preview

Questions have been asked. Guesses have been made. Expectations have been set. All that is left is to see what happens, as the 2017 Premier Development League season is finally here. Following last season's 3-9-2 finish, MOBA looks to hit the ground running and never look back, as they plan to be the dark horse in the South Atlantic Division. Playing in what is considered the most highly competitive division in the league, the 11-team South Atlantic features the likes of reigning division champ Charlotte Eagles, Carolina Dynamo, and SC United, all of whom made the playoffs last season. The division also includes second year teams South Georgia Tormenta FC and Tri-Cities Otters FC, as well as expansion sides Myrtle Beach Mutiny FC, Wilmington Hammerheads FC, North Carolina FC U23, Nashville SC U23, and Tobacco Road FC. Tightly packed and tightly contested, the run at the division title will not be easy, and with only two teams qualifying for the playoffs, wins will be a highl

Match Recap: MOBA Completes Perfect Pre-Season, Knocks Off Pumas 4-2

No season can be completely defined by how well the pre-season goes. It is a good measuring stick for potential success, but there is no telling what twists of fate a season may hold. A team who loses every match can still have a chance to have a strong season, however a good start can do wonders for a team's confidence going forward. With that said, Peachtree City got off to a scorching start, completing feats that are difficult to do in ten matches, much less just three. Coming off back-to-back wins against Georgia Revolution FC that saw MOBA outscore the Revs 10-1, Peachtree City wanted to continue their great form and head into the PDL season on a high note, and following Saturday's match, they did just as they had hoped. Taking on the East Point Pumas of Atlanta adult league Liga MAGG in what turned out to be the most competitive game of the pre-season, the Pumas looked to spoil Peachtree City's pre-season finale and steal a win at MOBA Soccer Academy. Hoping to

It is without question that every team wants to start their seasons off strong. Whether it's soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey, or any sport, teams use their pre-seasons to gear up and get into the feel of the year with the hope that they can win a few games and get themselves into form. Following last season's struggles, which started off in the pre-season, MOBA wanted to get out to a strong start, and with two of the three matches in the books, they have done just that. Playing two friendlies against Georgia Revolution FC, Peachtree City swept the series by an aggregate score of 10-1, with five different players finding the back of the net in Santiago Moore (2), Todd Fidler (2), Khallil Stewart (1), Ryan King (2), and Tomide Adabale (3). Movies could not write a better start for the yellow and black, however they have one more match to play before the new campaign, and it features a notably strong opponent that looks to spoil the party. The Pumas, out of East Point,

Match Recap: MOBA Takes the Second Leg, Defeats Georgia Revolution 7-1

In what seemed to have the potential to be one of the most competitive games of the year, MOBA put an end to those expectations as they dominated the Revs at home and made it clear that they have the potential to be one of the top teams in the Premier Development League this season. After winning 3-0 on the road in the first leg of the series, Peachtree City were looking for the Revs to attack both early and often, however that did not prove to be the case. Playing their first game in their new stadium, MOBA definitely wanted to give their fans a show, but they knew they could not let that take them away from what they were there to do: play football. Right from the opening kickoff, Peachtree City made it clear that Saturday's win was not a fluke. They were the better team, and that carried over to Fayette County. MOBA pressed early, winning the ball just seconds after the start. The home side peppered the goal with shot after shot, and saw their efforts pay off early. A mid

Match Preview: MOBA-Revs Rematch in Peachtree City

Few things in sports are more exciting than a rematch. Two teams that had battled it out not to long ago go after each other again in a battle to secure dominance. Cavaliers-Warriors, Alabama-Clemson, the soon to be Falcons-Patriots; everybody loves an exciting rematch, and following Saturday's friendly in Hampton, the stage now shifts to Peachtree City for the second match between Peachtree City MOBA and Georgia Revolution FC. Saturday saw MOBA head into Hampton, Georgia and pull off quite the upset. After falling in last year's matchup in heartbreaking fashion, MOBA looked to even up the series at one apiece. The game started off in surprising fashion, as MOBA took control early and never let up. A beautifully placed free kick from Santiago Moore saw the away team take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. The pressure continued, and Peachtree City put their foot down in the 43rd minute, as Santiago Moore found the back of the net for the second time after goalkeeper Bryce
